The Greenpoint branch of the Brooklyn Public Library was looking for an artist to paint a mural earlier this year. I submitted this… but they passed. I can’t wait to see the winning project, there are many great mural artists in the area. It would be fun to paint a piece of public art in my neighborhood, perhaps another time!

N. B. The second image in the post is a rendering of what the concept would have looked like on the wall, it’s not an actual photo!

hi guys! this is a comic i made for a final in my comics in literature class. we had to do a research paper on a topic we’d discussed in class and then accompany it with a comic with a relevant subject. my paper was about hyper-sexualization of women in comic books, but i decided to broaden it out here as well as personalize it and make myself the subject and discuss something i’ve been subjected to in the convention circuit and on the internet as well as thousands of other women, as well as give a cue to thought about how the comic book industry as well as the video game industry and even just media in general (all of which are male dominated) push such ridiculous pressures onto girls and women.

also, it feels kind of silly to have to add this since i hope it’s obvious, but i am very aware that there are men that don’t subscribe to this attitude, and am incredibly grateful that these issues are brought to light to people other than the ones that are subjected to it.

anyway haha i have literally been staring at this for 9 hours i don’t even know which direction is up anymore. thanks for reading!!!

Did you know that the International Space Apps Challenge has a Global Mainstage – kind of like a mission control for intergalactic space collaborations? Last year we were based in San Francisco, and this year we are excited to announce that the 2013 Global Mainstage will be in Philadelphia!

We invited Philadelphia local lead Andrew Thompson, Community Evangelist from Azavea, to share about why he and his team got involved in Space Apps and their plans to lead the global event.

We feel that Philadelphia is an ideal place for this year’s Space Apps Challenge. The event will be part of PhillyTechWeek 2013 and the Philadelphia Science Festival in late April, and hosting Space Apps is our way of contributing to our local science and technology community. So save April 20th and 21st on your calendar, and come join us in Philadelphia or any one of the over 25 other Space Apps cities worldwide!

Archives, Affects, & Activism: Preserving Queer & Trans Histories:

Come learn how Philly bookstores, libraries, zine fests, archives, and media artists are creating and preserving Philly queer and transgender histories, and making them available to the public in creative ways.

Presenters include:

- HELYX CHASE, Director of the Philadelphia Trans Oral History Project. Hailing from Philadelphia, Helyx is a gender queer dyke video artist, activist and media literacy educator. Ze is a Hampshire College graduate with a degree in Video, Social Justice, Youth Empowerment and Global Power Dynamics. Hir work focuses on extending tools and promoting media creation, specifically for those who are systematically excluded from methods of media production.

- SARAH ROSE, Co-Director of the Philly Feminist Zine Fest. The Zine Fest showcases some of the awesome zines Philly folks are making, and explores how zine making and DIY media in relation to social justice.

- CHE GOSSETT, writer and activist who is a contributor to Captive Genders: Trans Embodiment and the Prison Industrial Complex (eds. , Trans Studies Reader Volume II (eds. Susan Stryker and Aren Aziura) and the forthcoming anthology Queer Necropolitics (eds. Jin Haritaworn, Adi Kuntsman, Silvia Posocco). Che is currently working on a biography of AIDS activist Kiyoshi Kuromiya.

- BOB SKIBA, Archivist at the William Way LGBT Community Center. The William Way Archives are Philadelphia’s most extensive collection of rare books, periodicals, video and audio tapes, periodicals, personal correspondence, and other ephemera documenting the rich history of our LGBT communities.

So here’s the link to the actual letter. There is this thing about arguments - you can always win them in the future tense. This is a solid list of hopes for the girls who are right now thinking about what they want to be when they grow up. More female programmers is a win for everyone.

This one made my heart dance and weep at the same time:

We write good books, don’t we? I mean, I don’t write good books and maybe you don’t, but there are people here who do. And yeah, sure, maybe we get bashful about not being able to come out with a new billion dollar Avengers movie or something every summer like some countries do (not to name names) but when it comes to popular culture that’s purely made by Rock Hard Talent, like (and imagine I’m making that rock ‘n roll symbol with my fist as I say this) writing stories or creating music or even drawing comics, we puff up our chests and strut around like peacocks all like don’t you even try to step up, don’t you even try! High-fiving each other and being jerks about it.

Just making a scene.

Anyway, merciful Suzuki, we love seeing other Canadians be amazing and talented, we do.

That said!

I have gotten behind a project I think you will like, knowing now that we both have been lying about being humble this whole time and just want to plaster how cool we are all over the place. Project Bookmark Canada is a charitable organization that has a pretty interesting idea. Let them explain:
